Day of Play Anyone???

Check out this article on the importance of play and a new initiative aimed at promoting play.

I really want everyone to weigh in on this, but my vote would be that we have a Play Day here at GHE on February 6th. Please read this closely and comment on it. Otherwise I will not know your thoughts about it. There are other Wake County Schools participating as well.

Here is a link to a video that gives a rationale for this.

Please read this carefully and understand that this is not a day to show movies. There will be no screens. We will have the typical scheduled structures such as recess, lunch, and specials.

All day long, students will be responsible for playing all day long. Teachers will be supervising that play, but will not be structuring or planing any activities. It will be up to the students to make themselves "unboard" and play.

  2. 100% agree on a play day! I'm sure all of K is down. "The Power of Play" is so important. There is a lot of research on how NO smart kid gets board...a smart kid will always find something meaningful to do.

  3. I think we should do it! This sounds like a wonderful opportunity to see the creativity of our students and staff. :)

  4. Sounds like fun to me! It will be interesting to see how certain students embrace it and who struggles with it.

  5. This sounds great. I have brought in so many games from home and I really see how much fun my students have playing the games together - no structure from me. I know they would love to be able to finish a whole game. Am I allowed to play with them? I love board games.

  8. McMahon I definitely would like to do it. I have some planning sheets for planning play if anyone thinks they would like to make it available to their students and thinks students might be interested in and choose to write down some of their play ideas I would be happy to share mine as an example

  9. YES! I was reading up on the article last night and thought " I wish we could have a Play Day". I think this would be a great opportunity to engage with our students in a creative unstructured environment. This would be an experience that some of our students don't have the pleasure of enjoying.
    I am all in!

  10. I like this idea. As we've introduced BYOD into our school, and as I've subbed in a couple middle schools over the summer and seen middle schoolers with smart phones (yikes! ha ha), I've been thinking about the affect of devices on this generation. Technology can be interruptive and addictive (I know my smart phone is to me- ha!). Of course technology has many benefits and our world is always evolving, but I think it's important to make efforts like this to refocus on important things in life and to encourage social skills, team work, creativity, and problem solving. Thanks!

  11. I'm all in on this. There is so much we can learn from and about our students when they are engaged in these types of activities. Also, what a great time to build relationships with students when things are not quite as structured for them.

  12. I am here for it let's play! Let's learn how to play, and learn through playing!! Even I have limited my own screen time and found new ways to get out and interact with humans by PLAYing!

  13. Miss Lackey: Yes! There is so much research to support this and I am so happy that GHE is considering doing a school-wide play day! I am sure that some kids will be very taken-aback at first and not be sure what to do, but boredom is when creativity starts. ;)

  14. I love the idea! Many of our big kids struggle to entertain themselves when screens aren't an option. It may take them all day to figure out how to have unplugged fun :0)

  15. Great idea! A full day for kids to be kids and use their creativity to play and have fun! Priceless!

  16. I love this so much! I am so distraught over the number of kids that struggle with anxiety and depression. More play is definitely worth a try!

  17. I am all about a play day!! I learn more about my students from watching them play than I do from assessments. Play is an awesome opportunity to connect with my students and help them solve social problems in real context. I am so game for a play day!!

  18. LOVE the idea of a play day, and encouraging kids to use their imaginations more to interact with their peers!

  19. Play is childrens work! Count me in!
It will be an amazing day of creativity!

  20. I am 100% in! I could write pages about how important play is for children and am beyond excited about our day of play at GHE. Here's to higher order thinking at its best! The kids won't even realize how much brain power they are using at play. They're just having fun and making a gazillion new connections while they are at it. LOVE!
