Coming From Behind

We have definitely had a start and stop kind of beginning to the year. I know this has made it difficult to get up and running with interventions and progress monitoring.  Hopefully if the weather is kind we will get on a roll soon. Just a reminder that WIN time is to be used for providing interventions and progress monitoring.

As I have been around to classrooms, I have seen so much great discussion facilitated by teachers. Students are learning how to add on to someone's ideas and to respectfully disagree. I have seen many excellent examples of students citing textual evidence to support their positions. It is obvious to me that a lot of work has gone in to preparing students to be able to do this well. Talking about their learning builds academic vocabulary and allows students to formulate their thoughts before they are asked to answer a question in writing or aloud. This is a great way for some of our students who may struggle with writing to contribute and access the learning.

Below is an article about the power of student conversation.

  1. My son says, "It was something some kids came up with when he was in 3rd grade. It just means that they like something." LOL! Who knows how accurate that is. :)
